Do you ever have days when you want to throw in the towel? Days when you can’t seem to make heads or tails of your business? Days when you wonder why you put so much time and energy into your company but not feeling the return?
Good news! You are not alone. Ask any entrepreneur, and she will tell you there are many days of depression, sadness and struggle as one works through the kinks of her business.
I recently had a spell when I was ready to fold my business and get a J-O-B. Thankfully, it was short lived. I realized that this was the “breakdown before the breakthrough,” and that if I stick with it, great things would unfold.
If you ever find yourself in a yucky, throw-in-the-towel place with your business, here are six things you can do to help you get through this depression:
#1: Read your clients’ testimonials
If you ever need a quick injection of “why am I doing this,” then take a moment to read testimonials written by your clients. As you read each one, pause and think about how you helped your client, and how you have changed her life. Your customers need you, and reading testimonials are a great way to remind yourself why you started your business.
#2: Take a break from your business
Most entrepreneurs I know work more than 40 hours a week – often working in the evenings and weekends. You may be feeling bummed about your business because you are burned out. Schedule a “no business” day where you step away from the computer, cell phone and office. If you can break away for more than one day, that’s even better. Sometimes a quick recharge is what you need to get rejuvenated about your business.
#3: Talk to someone about your feelings
Are you bottling up your negative feelings? Being an entrepreneur is a lonely job, so make sure you find a business confidante who can be a sounding board for you. This could be a business or life coach, or maybe a fellow entrepreneur. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
#4: Journal your feelings
Expressing your emotions through writing is another great way to get past any business depression. Find a nice journal and “vent” your frustrations there. You will get the benefit of writing out your emotions, plus you’ll have a record for the future. Undoubtedly, you’ll have another bad day, and you can look at your journal for inspiration and reflection.
#5: Read inspirational books
What inspires you? Keep books and magazine articles on topics that inspire you around your home and office. Take a break from your business, curl up with your book and get inspirationally recharged from your reading. Sometimes just reading a chapter will do the trick!
#6: Stay off social media
More than likely, you are using social media to promote your business, and you should definitely keep doing that. However, how many times have you poured over your Facebook feed only to find depressing news or posts that anger you? That’s adding salt to the wound. If you’re feeling bummed about your business, turn off social media and stay away from it until you are feeling better. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can bounce back when you’re not inundated with bad news from your Facebook feed.
Getting depressed about your business is part of the process for many entrepreneurs. Even the most successful entrepreneurs have days of self-doubt and fear. The trick is to identify your feelings and then work toward a solution that makes you feel better about your business. Hopefully, one of the six tips mentioned in this blog post will help you the next time you’re feeling down about your business.
