Busting Through A Marketing Rut

It happens to all entrepreneurs – you reach a place where you feel unmotivated and uninspired with your marketing. I call this the “marketing rut” – and it feel icky and uncomfortable.

However, being in a marketing rut is an important signal. You’re being told to re-evaluate, reassess and re-energize your marketing efforts. The end result of going through this process is even better marketing!

So, when you feel like you’re in a marketing rut, here are five action steps to begin implementing:

#1: Take a break

One of the most important things you can do is to take a break once in a while from promoting your business. If you have a vacation scheduled soon, this is the perfect time to unplug from your marketing strategy. If you don’t have an upcoming vacation (and can’t schedule one), plan a “staycation” – where you step away from your strategy for just a few days to get re-energized.

#2: Hold a marketing retreat

Another idea is a complete 180 from the first tip: Take a day to unplug from everything else and have a Marketing Retreat. Ideally, this should be a location away from your office because it will help you stay on task. Some people rent a hotel room while others find a great table at their local café. Find the best place for you, using this time to plan your marketing strategy for the next 90 days. It’s the perfect time to update your marketing plan and calendar too.

#3: Hire someone to help you

Sometimes you are in a rut because you don’t have a coach or mentor who can help guide you. Having a third party go through your personal branding strategy can be helpful because she will often see things you miss. Also, a marketing coach can give you new and different marketing ideas to implement.

#4: Take a hard look at your efforts so far

A reason you may be in a rut is because you are not seeing enough positive results from your current marketing. A lack of results leads to discouragement. So, why are you not getting the results you are looking for? Are you giving it enough time? Are you implementing the right tactics? Are you sticking to your marketing plan? Are you devoting enough time to your strategy? These are just some of the questions you can ask yourself to determine why your efforts are not paying off. Once you figure out the “why,” you can change your approach and tactics.

#5: Take a marketing risk

Want to really shake things up? Take a huge risk with your marketing! Schedule a webinar without having the presentation ready. Go to a new networking meeting. Make an appointment with a photographer for new headshots. Post fun jokes on your social media accounts. What you consider “risky” is up to you, but one thing remains the same: Once you accomplish the risky task, it’s like a shot of adrenaline – and often just what you need to get out of your rut.
