How do you feel about taking risks? Scared? Exhilarated? Totally put off?

When it comes to growing your business, you need to be comfortable taking some risks, or you will become stagnant in your growth.

Is It Time To Take A Marketing Risk?

Truth be told, most risks are just perceived – something in your head that is blocking you. Sure there are financial risks or life-and-death situations, but the risks I am referring to are the ones that require a leap of faith. I believe these aren’t really risks, but extensions of a fear of failure.  And when you don’t take action because you are afraid to fail, you are stifling your growth.

Breaking through your fear of failing and these perceived risks are important exercises for strengthening your marketing. To help you overcome your resistance to risk taking, I want you to do a small activity.

Write down three risks that you would like to take over the next six months. As you write them down, also document the following:

  • Why are they risky
  • What are you afraid will happen
  • What could go wrong
  • What obstacles would you need to overcome

Here are some examples to help you get the creative juices flowing:

Assessing the risk

Once you have written down your three risks, make a plan on action on how you’ll implement each one. Add time frames and measurements so you’ll know if it’s a success. Plan for how you’ll break through each obstacle. Tear down each excuse with decisive action on how you’ll accomplish each risk.

When you write all of this down, you’ll see your risk isn’t as scary as you once perceived it to be. In fact, with a smart plan and goals, your risks are achievable. What you will often find is that your risk was never risky at all.

Taking risks is a natural part of the process of growing your business. When you plan how you’ll overcome the risk, you are breaking through the mindset you’ve created of “I can’t do this” and replacing it with a philosophy of “Yes, I can!” And when you believe you can, you will – and your marketing will be unstoppable.

    I love this, Jill! It’s so true that if we want to see results, we really must be willing to take risks. As they say, “No risk, no reward.” And there are all kinds of risks when we are the owner, entrepreneur, and marketing director for our business! This is a helpful tool and great encouragement.
