If you’re like many entrepreneurs, you are constantly in search of the “right answers” to your marketing questions.
I get it: You want to make sure you are marketing correctly. You don’t want to waste your time or money. You want to get it right.
And as you search for the right answers, you waffle. You get “analysis paralysis.” And you wait for the perfect time to get done with whatever marketing you want to get done.
And you may even abandon whatever marketing question you have because you can’t get the answer soon enough, or you begin to doubt yourself, or something new and shiny comes along.
Does this sound familiar at all?

There are no “right” marketing answers.
Yep, you read that correctly.
Are you shocked that a marketing coach – someone who makes her living giving marketing answers to people – would state this?
Here’s why I make this bold statement…
Yes, there are bona fide times when you need marketing help.
Most of the time, however, your quest to find the “right” answers to your marketing questions are really mindset issues. In fact, in more cases, you are not looking for the “right” answers, but succumbing to your Ego instead.
I’ve narrowed this down to four truths. Let’s go through each one.
TRUTH #1: Your desire to get the right answer is a distraction.
Here’s what I know from coaching countless entrepreneurs since 2013.
- Chances are, you know the answer to your marketing question.
- Chances are, you are procrastinating on what you need to get done.
- Chances are, you are not feeling confident in YOU, not your marketing abilities.
You see, Mr. Ego likes to wield his head in different ways. Sometimes, it’s a voice in your head that says “don’t do this.”
Other times, though, he appears as a questioner, planting seemingly harmless questions in your mind, forcing you to stop what you’re doing to find the answer. This leads to wasted time, discouragement, and inaction.
You may a question about whether or not to start a Facebook Group or how to deliver the best elevator speech in the world – but is that really your question?
Or are you just avoiding, procrastinating, or second-guessing yourself?
I say this with all the love in the world: Nine times out of ten, it’s the latter.
You are not really seeking answers – you are distracted.
The cure? Be focused and intentional – and keep moving your feet.
TRUTH #2: Your learning is an action of procrastination.
I am a lifelong learner. I love to learn. Learning is a safe place for me because I am smart and good at it.
However, there’s a line between learning for the love of learning and feeling like you have to know every little thing before you act.
This scenario usually plays out like this:
I want to use Instagram to market my business. So, I am going to read 25 articles about Instagram. Oh, and I see this expert is offering a course, so I will take that. And then I will ask someone in my circle for their Instagram advice. Oh wait! My friend’s advice is different than the expert’s advice. Now what do I do? I’ll just buy another course from a different expert…
Meanwhile, you could have just started using Instagram and have it all figured it out by now (because you also learn by doing!).
I am not suggesting that you should stop learning things, but set a limit. You will learn more from doing and learning at the same time – and you’ll get faster results too.
TRUTH #3: Your fear of “wasting time” is a bunch of bullshit.
If I had a nickel for every time someone offered up the “I don’t want to waste my time” line, I could retire.
No one wants to waste time. But here’s the thing: You’re wasting more time waiting for some kind of “right answer.” Waffling and waiting are the time wasters – not experimenting and trying.
The “I don’t want to waste time” excuse is classic Ego talk. Knock it off. You are not wasting time if you take imperfect action.
TRUTH #4: You are afraid of making a mistake.
Mistakes are lessons. Mistakes are an opportunity to learn and do a better job next time. They are not the end of the world.
When you are searching for “the right answer” to your marketing question, your fear of making a mistake has taken hold of you.
As a practitioner of the Law of Attraction, I believe that when you are afraid of making a mistake, you will attract a mistake. (Remember, like attracts like). It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy – and not a very productive one.
Michael Jordan missed a lot of shots in his quest for excellence, right? And so will you – and it’s perfectly okay.
Instead of being afraid of making a mistake, take imperfect action and get ready to learn from your missteps.
I know this is a tough love blog post, but I keep seeing this theme with the wonderful people that I coach and teach. They want the “right” answer to their marketing question, but it’s just a guise.
I see the regrettable pauses, the discouragement, the lack of confidence, and the “I just need to learn one more thing” – and it all results in slower marketing implementation, missed connections with your tribe, and frustrating results.
Stop looking for the “right” answers. Instead, take imperfect action and go. You got this.
