Using Your Marketing Platform For Social Good

Using Your Marketing Platform For Social Good by Jill CelesteNo matter the size, your marketing platform can not only be used to grow your business; it can also be used for social good.

I define “social good” as a charitable or civic cause that you align with, whose purpose is to make the world a better place. On a larger scale this could include organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Doctors Without Borders, to smaller groups such as your local food bank or home for runaway teens.

As a female entrepreneur, I bet you have causes you are passionate about, but you may not have considered how you can help your favorite causes through your marketing platforms.

You may also have been timid about mixing your business with your causes. What would your ideal clients think? Will it hurt your business?

We’ll tackle all of your questions in this week’s marketing strategy. My intention is to encourage you to use your marketing platform for social good – all as a way to shine your Light even brighter in this world. Let’s begin!

I love to create graphics that enhance the learning in my weekly marketing strategies. Please feel free to share these on your social media!

The greater the cause, the louder the Resistance. - Jill Celeste

We are at a crossroads in our world.

We can take one path that’s more of the same – climate change, human rights infringements, war, voter suppression, racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Or we can take another path – one that’s filled with changing people’s lives for the better – peace, clean water, conservation, equal rights, and love and compassion for all.

I pray that we abandon our current path and take the latter. I hope you do too.

I believe female entrepreneurs will lead us down this new path of enlightenment, change, and love.

For this to work, two things must happen:

  • We must constantly and consistently share our messages, market our gifts, and shine our Lights so people can find us.
  • We must use our voice not only to market our businesses, but to cast a light on causes that are important to us.

I talk a lot about #1 (marketing) in my blog posts, but today, I want to focus on #2 – using our voices and marketing platforms for social good.

Resisting using your platform for social good

Let’s first address any Resistance you’re feeling. What if your ideal clients are turned off by your cause? What if someone leaves hateful messages on your social media posts? What if your friends and family turn on you for amplifying your voice?

These concerns, though very real, are just forms of Resistance.

I love this quote by Stephen Pressfield:

“The more important a call to action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel about answering it.”

You see? The greater the cause, the louder the Resistance.

You have to dig down deep and press through. Take one small step. You’ll get more courageous if you go one step at a time.

Using your marketing platform for social good

Your marketing platform consists of an audience – your social media followers, your email subscribers, people in your networking groups, and others who are part of your community.

This may be a small number, and that’s okay. It’s not about the number of people. It’s about changing the world, one person at a time.

Your first step is to ask yourself: What cause is super important to me? You probably have many, but please pick one.

Once you decide on your cause, tell your audience about it. There’s no wrong way to do this! You can write a blog post or email to your list. You can post about it on social media. You can present about it at your networking meeting. You could even do a Facebook Live about your cause.

Talk about your cause and why it’s important to you. Share stories. And then ask your audience to do something – whether it’s to donate, or share your message, or just think about something.

That’s your first step.

Once you finish this step, do it again. And again and again. You’ll get bolder with each attempt.

Dealing with the critics

Let’s face it – you may have to deal with critics on this journey. Here’s what I want you to remember:

  • If your ideal client doesn’t agree with your cause and doesn’t want to do business with you, then she wasn’t your ideal client, was she?
  • If someone trolls your social media and leaves a hateful comment, then you know you struck a chord and must press forward.
  • If your family and friends admonish you for sharing this cause, block them from your social media or unsubscribe them from your list. Do it with love. But please do it. They are projecting their own insecurities on you – and you don’t need it!

Using your marketing platform for social good can be scary. But it’s enormously gratifying. You are changing the world with your messages. And if you can make one person’s life better, then isn’t it worth your fear? (I think so!)

Please be brave. The world needs your leadership – and your voice. You can do this!
