When The Fraud Factor Stops You From Marketing

When The Fraud Factor Stops You From Marketing by Jill CelesteWhat is “The Fraud Factor”? It’s a common mindset block for purpose-driven entrepreneurs and can wield its ugly head in many ways:

  • Feeling like you have less experience, education, or credentials than others in your industry
  • Wondering “who do you think you are” giving out advice when your own business/life/relationship is a hot mess
  • Second guessing why anyone would want to work with you when they can work with Mr. So and So.

Do these sound familiar? Chances are you’ve felt these fraud factor conditions during your entrepreneurial journey.

The Fraud Factor can be debilitating – not only for your mindset, but also for your marketing.

In this week’s marketing strategy, I will give you tips on how to bust through the Fraud Factor block and become more visible in your marketing.

When you recognize that “who do you think you are” message is really just your Ego, you can push past it, market more effectively, and start helping more people!

BLOG:

Not long ago, I coached a Celestial Circle member on how to increase visibility online with the intention of getting more clients. This entrepreneur is a parenting coach, and as I taught her how to get in front of moms who need her, she said to me:

“Jill, why would any mom want to work with me? All these parenting coaches have Ph.D.’s or are licensed therapists. I am not as qualified as my competitors.”

My heart sank when she said this. While this entrepreneur didn’t have a Ph.D., she did successfully raise two children (including homeschooling one) and was a former educator with experience not only in the classroom, but also in school administration.

She was more than qualified!

This is an example of when the Fraud Factor creeps into our mindset. The Fraud Factor is just another name for Ego.

It’s a very real mindset block. When it comes to feeling confident about our abilities, the feeling of being a fraud can stop even the most confident entrepreneur.

Your job when the Fraud Factor appears is to remember the following:

#1: Your ideal clients want to work with you. That’s what makes them ideal.

Think about the story I just told about my Celestial Circle member. Sure, there will be moms who want a therapist or psychologist with a Ph.D. Those moms are not my member’s ideal clients.

Your ideal clients want to work with you and no one else. That’s what makes them ideal. Please don’t forget this!

#2: Your credentials are not only good enough. They are just right.

In marketing, we have a fancy term called “credibility factors.” These are all the aspects of your expertise that lend credibility to you. Credibility factors include your education, licensing, and experience.

When you begin to feel like your credentials aren’t good enough, make a list of your credibility factors. Read over your list and remember: For your ideal client, your credibility factors are exactly what she’s looking for.

(And be gentle with yourself!)

#3: If comparing yourself to others is killing your mindset, then knock it off.

Theodore Roosevelt once said” “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I love this quote, because It’s what I see time and time again from entrepreneurs.

Everyone is wired differently. Some entrepreneurs can compare themselves to others in their industries and get invigorated.

Others (including me) can compares themselves and feel like a fraud. If you’re like this, then stop comparing. Unfollow them social media, unsubscribe from their lists, and stop looking at their stuff. You’ll feel so much better!

Dear entrepreneur, your mindset is really the only thing holding you back. It stops you from getting more visible, from following up with your sales prospects, and from getting on the phone with prospective JV partners.

The Fraud Factor is a real mindset block. I get it too! However, it’s just that – a block – not a fact. You are good enough, credentialed enough, educated enough, and just perfect for your ideal clients. Never forget that. I am rooting for.

ABOUT JILL

Hi, I’m Jill Celeste. I teach purpose-driven entrepreneurs (just like you) everything you need to know about marketing so you can become the Director of Marketing for your business.

Because when you put your Director of Marketing hat squarely on your head, marketing is your number one priority (which will result in more clients!).

When I am not teaching about marketing, you’ll find me hanging out with my husband or my teenage boys, or taking a nap with my basset hound, Emma. I also like to play with my two guinea pigs and feed the backyard ducks (much to my neighbor’s chagrin).

If you’re feeling alone in your entrepreneurial journey, I invite you to check out my monthly membership group, The Celestial Circle. Affordable, loving, supportive, informative, and fun – that’s how we roll in The Celestial Circle. We would love to welcome you!
