Your Ego Is A Crappy Marketing Coach

Your Ego is a crappy marketing coach.

What do I mean by that?

Your Ego’s job is to keep you “playing small” so that you’re always safe.

However, to grow your business and market successfully, you can’t play it small. You have to take risks. You have to get out of your comfort zone.

(Good marketing coaches encourage you to go bigger. Your Ego never does. See why it’s a crappy marketing coach?)

I hope you’ll take time to check out this week’s marketing strategy, because it’s an important part of your marketing mindset.

If you want to succeed, you’ll follow the advice here. I promise: It will help!

Your Ego is that voice in your head that wants you to be safe and play small. It says things like this:

  • It’s a lot of work. Don’t do it.
  • Just skip it. It doesn’t matter anyway.
  • It’s okay to miss it because it’s a waste of your time.

When you’re an entrepreneur, your Ego can sound like a boom box blasting in your head. Its messages are deafening, increasing in volume as you move out of your comfort zone.

Here’s the thing: You need to get out of your comfort zone to grow your business. Your biggest marketing successes are outside of your comfort zone.

But when your Ego keeps sending “don’t do it” messages to you, it can drown out the whispers from your heart – the messages of support, love and encouragement. Your Ego is loud.

Here’s what I want you to remember when your Ego is piping “play small” thoughts in your head:

Your Ego is a crappy marketing coach.

It’s important to never take marketing advice from your Ego. Your Ego gives the worst marketing advice.

When my Ego is playing full blast in my head, I think about this Lindsey Vonn commercial from Under Armor:

Listen to it again. Do you hear her Ego talking to her?

It’s cold out there, Lindsey. The wind, the sheer ice. To deal with that takes work, training.

As the video plays on, Lindsey heads to the gym anyway, ignoring her Ego’s negative self-talk. Would Lindsey Vonn be a world-class skier if she listened to her Ego? No way! She goes to the gym, hits the slopes, and stays focused on her goals – despite what her Ego is telling her.

That’s what you must do too, if you want marketing success.

Your marketing success comes from three fronts: knowledge, consistency, and staying in Faith. When your Ego talks, it shatters your Faith. That’s why I want you to tell your Ego to fuck off.

If you need inspiration, remember Lindsey’s Under Armor video. Do you want to be the person who stays in bed because of the cold, or do you want to be the person who works hard at the gym, no matter what?

If you want the latter, remember what I said earlier:

Your Ego is a crappy marketing coach.

Tell it to pipe down and go after your entrepreneurial dreams. Implement marketing tactics that take you out of your comfort zone.

You got this. I believe in you.

ABOUT JILL

Jill CelesteHi, I’m Jill Celeste. I teach purpose-driven entrepreneurs (just like you) everything you need to know about marketing so you can become the Director of Marketing for your business.

Because when you put your Director of Marketing hat squarely on your head, marketing is your number one priority (which will result in more clients!).

When I am not teaching about marketing, you’ll find me hanging out with my husband or my teenage boys, or taking a nap with my basset hound, Emma. I also like to play with my two guinea pigs and feed the backyard ducks (much to my neighbor’s chagrin).

Want to learn more about marketing? I invite you to get my book for free – just head over to www.ThatFirstClient.com. And don’t let the title fool you; it will help you get your first – or next – client. I am honored to help you! ♥

“When your Ego talks, it shatters your Faith.” This is really true. The Ego is horrible in so many ways. It’s not our true self. Too much negativity. Sometimes I wonder how humans even got that way.
I feel like having a healthy mind, body, spirit and soul will be the anchor to never listen to that Ego Again. Awareness is key in this. Thank you Jill for bringing this to light.
